The Isle of Capri

Capri is a new typeface designed by Felix Braden in the tradition of geometric typefaces from the late 20s. The proportions of the letters and the overall impression are modern and contemporary but also retain the crude charme of the constructivist concept. Capri is primarily designed to be used as a headline typeface. It stands for a modern interpretation of classical elegance.

After more than five years we are finally able to release Nordic Narrow designed by dutch type designer René Verkaart, and welcome him into the line of Fountain designers.

One of the trademarks of the typeface is the diagonal mid strokes. A reference to the nordic runes, which he studied during the design process.

Even though Nordic Narrow has its base in a geometric grid, it still manages to keep an warm analogue touch.

Aria – Inspired by inscription

Aria Pro is a new typeface consisting of only two fonts (something unusual these days with a big heap of super families swarming the market) – Regular & Italic.

To describe it we use the words of the designer – Rui Abreu:

"The inspiration for this typeface came from the epigraph on a frame of a nineteenth century painting. I was fascinated by the peculiar capitals of the inscription. The high contrast, and the overall quirkiness, especially the tail of the R and the oblique stems on the M, was interesting.

I decided to draw a display font with high contrast and a vertical axis, in a reference to the transitional form. Still I wanted to capture the spirit of the original letters, which to me are so imbued with Romanticism. This approach allowed for some exuberance on the regular style, but also led to more calligraphic letterforms in the italic – in which "the flow of the curves" lead the way.

To add to this epigraphic nature there is a number of ornaments that accompany words accordingly to their uppercase or lowercase form. For versatility there's also a good amount of ligatures, alternative glyphs, and a special set of ornamental numbe

Aria Pro comes with a nice set of ligatures and alternate glyphs with wide range of OpenType features, allowing extensive and versatile use. The price is set at 59 euros.

A rare bird

A creative collaboration between Göran Söderström (Stockholm) and Peter Bruhn (Malmö), The Satura Suite began with Göran’s concept for a reversed contrast typeface — one in which the horizontal strokes are heavy, rather than the more traditional vertical stress. Sparked by these ideas, Peter responded with his own thoughts. For months, the design bounced back and forth over the Nordic intertubes until the summer of 2010 when the friends met in Malmö to complete the project in person. Type design is most often a solitary undertaking, so perhaps it is this dialogue between the two Swedes that makes Satura so unique.

In March 2010 we packed our gear, and flew up to a cold Stockholm filled with snow, and had a conversation with Göran about his typefaces and his thoughts on type design.

Next runner up is Stefan Hattenbach who was interviewed at the same time.

Just more condensed

After making the Meadow family Göran Söderström felt the need to do a slightly more condensed version of the typeface. A version that saves a little space but has the same character. Character sets are identical, finish and quality is the same, it's just narrower to make room for more words.

From Portugal with love

This evening we see the release of Rui Abreu's modern slab serif. A project that started almost four years ago. It started as a rigid and geometric design, but during this long period it developed into a more organic and balanced typeface, as it moved away from the initial modularity. Foral maintains its geometric concept, but with harmonized proportions and polished forms

Foral is a eight-weight typeface, ranging from Light to Extra Bold with matching italics. It come with Small Caps and a wide range of OpenType features, allowing extensive and versatile use.

Heroine Movie Trailer

A new typeface designed by Göran Söderström – Heroine. Inspired by the typeface Windsor, designed by Eleisha Pechey in 1905. Windsor is the typeface used in the titles of many Woody Allen movies. A modern interpretation of this rusty pearl is something that always have been missing in the major type libraries. But Heroine is not only an interpretation, it goes beyond that. With the addition of swashes and alternate letters in several styles it becomes very addicitve.

Sweet Warm Meadow

Fountain happily presents a new typeface release: Meadow Pro designed by Göran Söderström. Meadow is a warm analog sans typeface for everyday use. With a contemporary fresh expression it's well suited for everything - from strong headlines all the way down to small size settings.

The family contains romans and italics in 5 weights (10 styles). Small caps, extended language support and OpenType features for the most demanding situations are included.

Typographica is back with a new design, and a new concept. From reporting on type in general they're now focused on typeface and type book reviews, with occasional commentary on fonts and typographic design. We feel it's a good idea since there is no other site focusing on typeface reviews.

They've also published their yearly Favorite Typefaces of 200x. This time two Fountain typefaces are included – Rui Abreu's Orbe and Gábor Kóthay's Dessau.

Fountain and PSY/OPS in a joint release

Catacumba Pro - inspired by tomb inscriptions. Fountain and PSY/OPS come together in a special joint release of a new typeface from Portuguese type designer Rui Abreu.

Catacumba Pro is a six-weight typeface inspired by the painted inscriptions of the Igreja de São Francisco church's catacombs in Porto, Portugal. The forms are clearly influenced by Victorian style, with an unmistakable French heritage, and yet they somehow convey a decidedly Portuguese sensibility.

Catacumba's centerpieces are its two titling styles: the exuberant Excelsa, and the Didonesque Moderata. From these two decoratives, four new cuts are derived. These, the Text fonts, are tamer and more understated, but maintain the same artisanal grounding and DNA as the display fonts. Each Catacumba font includes a wide selection of OpenType ranges and features, allowing for extensive use within the Latin range.

Our new site launches!

This year Fountain has been operating as a type foundry for 15 years. To celebrate this we decided to make some changes.
Fountain is proud to announce the launch of our new website, a brand new OpenType library and the release of 4 new typefaces.

New OpenType library

It took a while – a bit longer than we guessed and hoped – but we are very happy to finally have converted the fonts in our library into the OpenType format. It has not bewn an easy task. When necessary we have had to re-drawn the glyph curves from scratch and fix old glitches. The glyph sets has been expanded to cover full CE support. A full range of different OpenType features has been added. With this launch we say goodbye to the old legacy (PS1/TT) formats, and from now on the Fountain library will be available exclusively in the OpenType format.

Even though we worked hard to get all families ready, there is still a few families not fully ready at site launch time. We're working hard on them, and we promise to make them available in the beginning of next year.

We offer upgrades from legacy typefaces. Until January 31, 2009 we will offer very generous discounts (up to 68% off in some cases).
Have you bought any of our "Std" fonts (see list on the Upgrades page) within 2008 your upgrade discount is even more gentile – 90% off.

New website

The site has been re-designed from scratch with a new strong database foundation. The pages load quicker, and we have an easier time updating. Our domain name has changed to fountaintype.com so will be easier to find us, old links will be redirected and old email addresses will still work.
The typefaces can now be downloaded directly after purchase. We will miss the direct contact with our customers, but this will save time for all parties. You are of course still always welcome to contact us.

We've added a new way to test the fonts and their OT features by using the amazing LetterSetter application so nicely put together by Letterror. It's available through the typeface pages, please take it for spin.

The 4 new typefaces

On this day of celebration it would be suitable to not only update our old fonts, but also to release some new typefaces. We think the selection is a nice mix of genres, and we also take the oppertunity to say welcome to two new type designers – Lucas Brusquini and Göran Söderström.

Atlantik - Ocean ornaments in 6 fonts

Atlantik is a font family filled with ornaments related to the waves . Based on patterns from old specimen books it holds a collection of 213 single ornaments divided into 6 sets.

Dessau Pro - A historical sans serif family

Dessau is a take on Bauhaus typography with an Hungarian twist. This typeface family consists of a total of 11 different styles, and variations.

Flieger Pro - A geometric script in three weights

The origin for this typeface comes from an old logotype. But Göran Söderström has expanded the idea to a large glyph collection of alternates,swashes, end-glyphs and ligatures. Lotta Bruhn added a set of illustrations in font format to go with the typeface and a set of wing initials.

Tycho Pro - A serif family rooted in the stars above

The typeface Tycho started as a college project. The printed works of Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, was the starting point. It soon became clear that the font used was of very poor quality and most likely a mix of several different fonts. Gradually the work shifted from pure revival to the design of a new typeface. Tycho comes in four styles – Book, Book Italic, Bold and Display – all with full CE support, Small Caps and OT features.

Redrawn

There are a few of our typefaces that are still being redrawn One of them is Corpus Gothic. In the new version (top) we have tightened up the spacing to fit in more letters in newspaper settings. There's also a completely new Small Caps. The spurs on the lower case has been "blunted" so that they're less sharp.
